Online marketing: what it is and how to make it pay off
Online marketing is promoting a company over the internet — through your website, search engines, paid ads, content and social media. Below: what it is made of, what it costs and in what order to build it.
What is online marketing
Online marketing is the set of activities a company uses to promote its products and services over the internet — through its own website, search engines, paid advertising, content, e-mail and social media. It differs from traditional marketing in one essential way: almost every step can be measured, so you know what a visitor, an enquiry and a customer actually cost you.
You will also see the terms internet marketing, digital marketing, e-marketing and web marketing. In everyday use they mean the same thing. The one distinction worth noting: digital marketing is understood slightly more broadly — it also covers digital channels that don't run over the internet, such as SMS campaigns or ads on digital billboards.
Its opposite is offline marketing — flyers, radio, print, billboards. Online marketing doesn't replace all of it, but for most small and mid-sized companies it is cheaper to start with, more precisely targeted and, above all, reviewable afterwards: with a flyer you estimate, with a Google Ads campaign you see the numbers.
How we approach online marketing
Online marketing isn't a checklist of channels you keep around so nobody can say you don't. It's a way to bring the right people to your website and turn them into customers — and, above all, to know which part of the budget actually did it. Most companies do some SEO, some ads and something on social media, but nobody holds it together and nobody measures the result.
We approach it like the technical company we are: first we measure where you are today, then we work out where the biggest gaps are, and only then do we spend money. That way, at the end of each month, you can say what brought in enquiries and what was merely an investment that leads nowhere.
What online marketing is made of
In practice online marketing splits into six areas: SEO, paid advertising (PPC), content marketing, social media, the website itself and measurement. You don't need them all at once — below you'll also find the order in which it pays to add them.
SEO and search visibility
A technical foundation, keywords based on real demand and content that answers them. The goal is that you get found by people who are searching for exactly what you sell.

Campaigns built on intent, not on spending the budget. The right negative keywords, a clean structure and conversion tracking, so you know what a single enquiry costs you.
More about PPC and Google AdsContent and copywriting
Text and articles that actually solve something — they help in search and they convince the visitor you're the right choice. We write from what we understand, not from buzzwords.
Social media
Managing your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles with a clear goal: keeping the brand in front of those who are glad to buy from you again, and bringing new people in through content worth sharing.
Website and conversions
Traffic is only half the job — the other half is a website that turns it into enquiries. Fast loading, a clear offer and a form you can finish on a phone.
Measurement and evaluation
GA, Search Console and conversion tracking set up so the numbers make sense. Without measurement, online marketing is guessing.
From analysis to results you can actually track
We don't start with a campaign. We start by finding out where you are, and we finish by being able to say what it brought.
-
1
Analysis and audit
We go through the website, SEO, campaigns, social media and measurement and find out what works and where money leaks out. This is our online marketing audit — the starting point of every engagement.
-
2
Strategy and priorities
We turn the findings into a plan ordered by what brings the most. You decide what you want to do yourselves and what we take over — the budget goes where it has the biggest impact.
-
3
Execution
We set up campaigns, fix the website, prepare content and measurement. Always so that every change can be evaluated — not 'done', but 'done and measured'.
-
4
Measurement and optimisation
We watch the numbers and fine-tune as we go. What works, we reinforce; what doesn't, we stop before it spends another cent of budget.
Who it makes sense for
We don't do online marketing for everyone at any price. We get on best with companies that want to understand the result, not just pay an invoice.
Small and mid-sized companies that spend on marketing every month and finally want to know what comes back from it.
Companies with their own product or service that want to grow through search and campaigns, not through random posts.
Owners who would rather hear uncomfortable numbers than a comfortable guess — and want a partner who will help them improve them.
We almost always start with an audit
Before we put even a single euro into online marketing, we want to know what we're building on. That's why most engagements begin with an online marketing audit — ten working days, one report and a list of steps ordered by how much money they bring.
You get the audit even if you don't order the implementation from us — the report is yours and you can hand the work to anyone based on it. If you're from the Žilina Region, INOVIA may cover part of the audit.
Frequently asked questions
How much does online marketing cost?
It depends on what we do and how much of it. We don't start with a flat fee but with an audit, after which we can give you concrete numbers — what's worth doing, how long it takes and what impact to expect. Only then do we talk about a monthly engagement.
Do you do just one thing, like only SEO or only Google Ads?
Yes, if it makes sense to start with a single channel, we start with it. But we always look at the whole — there's no point pouring budget into ads if visitors drop off on a slow website or a broken form.
How soon will we see results?
With paid campaigns you see the first data within days; with SEO and content it's months. You'll get more precise numbers after the audit, once we know what state you're starting from and what to fix first.
Do we have to sign a long-term contract?
No. The audit is a one-off service and the implementation is a matter of agreement. You stay with us because you see results, not because a contract holds you.
We're outside Žilina. Can we work remotely?
Yes. Most of the work happens online, and the report and ongoing reviews we handle remotely. The only thing tied to the Žilina Region is the option of having the audit part-funded through INOVIA.
What is the difference between online, internet and digital marketing?
In practice, nothing substantial — online marketing, internet marketing, e-marketing and web marketing are synonyms for promotion over the internet. The term digital marketing tends to be a little broader: it also covers digital channels that don't run over the internet, such as SMS campaigns or ads on digital panels.
Is online marketing worth it for a small company?
Yes, but not all of it at once. A small company gains the most by first sorting out its website and measurement, then basic and local SEO, and only then switching on paid advertising. In that order the entry cost is lowest and every further step builds on the previous one.
